Person of the Week: Meet Bata Bangladesh’s Ahasan Ali Rajmul

Ahasan Ali Rajmul is assistant general manager of the management information system (MIS) at Bata Bangladesh. He has been responsible for preparing in-house software for a variety of departments, including the Connectivity 24x7 project, for which he won a Bata Award in 2015, and Bata World News interviewed him to hear what he thinks has made him so successful.

Tell us about your current role.

As an IT manager, my role is to provide the IT support for smooth business operations, improve the process flow of existing systems, develop new systems or reports as per business requirements, and reduce the time gap using the IT infrastructure. At the same time, for business continuation, I have to design and implement zero data-loss and high-availability architecture for applications and databases.

To what do you attribute your great performance at Bata Bangladesh up to now?

My most unique attribute is passion. Without a passion for what I am doing, it is near impossible to perform ideally in my job. My strongest attribute is my determination. I take on every challenge head-on, and do what I need to accomplish my goals, even when the challenge is difficult. My favorite attribute is leadership. With leadership skills I lead my various groups of the IT team, and results come when all groups work together.

Please tell us about some of the in-house software you have developed for the company.

These include Connectivity 24×7, a set of online business reporting tools for retail, merchandising, finance, CDC and audit departments, and Bata Resource Planning (BRP), a customized ERP software for Bata Bangladesh.

How does this software help streamline the processes for which it was developed?

Our BRP software helps streamline the process by integrating the majority of business processes, allowing access to the data in real time, enabling high levels of integration across business functions and units and providing for the widespread sharing of data from a single information repository.

What has been your contribution to the digitalization of the company’s various departments?

For the digitalization of Bata Bangladesh’s various departments, I have taken a few initiatives, like converting manual hand-written documents to electronic printing system, and electronic data transfer for different databases, e-commerce and other institutes as per requirements. In addition, the integration of physical and digital systems with innovative business models and the creation of smart software and services.

What has been the biggest challenge in your work?

In recent years, the role of the IT department has gradually moved from a support role into that of a business driver. As technology continues to evolve at a furious pace, it presents both opportunities and challenges. A few of the challenges in my work are: enhancing and protecting business value; aligning and integrating IT risk management and business continuity capabilities with broader, long-term business strategy, and lastly cyber security, as managing and strengthening security and privacy for the organizations’ systems and data is now a top priority across all industries.

How do you organize your team to ensure you are working in the most efficient way possible?

Our IT team has four subteams based on their working area, each with specific goals and objectives, where each team member is selected based on their knowledge, experience and “Serve with Passion” approach, as we are a service department. Here, my job is to train the team, organize them, get them resources, guide them and monitor the task list to ensure each team is working in the most efficient way.

What is the most important thing for you in your work at Bata?

I want to work in a job that I am passionate about, and for a company that respects and rewards my contributions. I want to have coworkers whom I like and respect. I think these things all work together for a positive work environment, which increases productivity, and I found this work environment at Bata.
