BCP Sri Lanka Joins Relief Efforts Following Devastating Floods

Sri Lanka was badly stricken by natural disasters early this summer, and the local Bata Children’s Program did its part to contribute to the relief effort.

Floods and landslides resulted in 210 deaths and 600,000 displaced people in May and June. The whole country mourned the losses and came together to provide aid to those affected.

BCP Sri Lanka, in addition to making direct donations, enabled many convenient bulk purchases by donors.

A special initiative was also carried out in five Bata stores: each consumer making a purchase of over US$20 was able to donate thong sandals to flood victims.

BCP Sri Lanka then entrusted these sandals an NGO with which it has a strong longstanding relationship, Plan International Sri Lanka. Plan was able to quickly reach those in need, and distributed the shoes to underprivileged schoolchildren in a rural town, Ratnapura, that was one of the hardest hit.

Chamila De Silva, HR manager of Bata Sri Lanka, said, “We are glad to share this donation, and we are sure our consumers are glad to give some comfort to the aching little feet of those whose belongings were washed away by floods.”
