BCP China Helps Children of Longtan Village Learn English

The Bata Children's Program (BCP) China recently concluded an initiative that aimed to help a group of young, underprivileged children with their English studies, as part of the BCP's focal point of improving education.

BCP China cooperated with the Youth Star development center to run an English course in Longtan village every Sunday from June 11 to July 2, in order to teach a group of 13 children, aged 8 to 10 years old, the basics of spoken English. The children of the village rarely have English classes at school, as rural regions of Guangzhou have limited resources.

A team of six volunteers took part in the activity, four of them as English teachers, responsible for preparing teaching plans and taking lessons, and the others in charge of observing and recording students’ performance. The course was divided into four sections, entitled: “Hello, how are you?” “I am a traveler”, “What time is it?” and “How is the weather?”

The children were taught English through songs, dialogues and role plays, and at the end of the course, BCP China awarded English-Chinese dictionaries to six of the top students in order to encourage them to continue their studies.

Yuking Yu, one of the BCP volunteers, commented: "I’m glad to be part of the BCP activities. We played together, and learned useful English sentences. I love these cute kids, and hope they will have a good development in the future."
